For Tournament Families

Ten weekends a season. One plan.

Travel ball, club soccer, competitive cheer: the family that follows the schedule is a family that travels all year. Here is the protection built for repeat trips, and why it isn't the same thing as the team's liability insurance.

What travel insurance do travel-sports families actually need?

Trip protection for the family's own costs — the prepaid hotel blocks, the flights to the showcase, a kid who gets sick mid-trip, the bags with the gear. The team's liability insurance protects the organization; it is not designed to reimburse what a family spends to follow the schedule.

Most of what is sold as “tournament insurance” is liability coverage for clubs and leagues. The family’s side — cancellation, delay, baggage, medical away from home — is ordinary travel protection, and it is the side nobody hands you at registration. The full benefit walkthrough is on our coverage pages.

Is an annual plan worth it for tournament travel?

If your family repeats trips all season, one annual plan covers each trip you take during the plan year — trips away from home, near or far, all year, up to the plan's per-trip length limit — instead of buying protection five separate times. Annual plans lead with emergency medical and evacuation on every covered trip.

The trade to understand: per-trip cancellation on annual plans carries per-trip limits rather than a percentage of one insured trip cost. For the season’s rhythm of repeated weekends, that structure is the point; for one expensive trip, a single-trip plan may fit better. Both are laid out on the annual plans page.

How is this different from the insurance the club already has?

The club's policy protects the club — its obligations as an organization running teams and events. Your family's travel protection covers your own trip: the money you prepaid, delays that strand you, bags that go missing, and medical emergencies on the road. Different buyers, different beneficiaries, different products.

The plain-language walkthrough of that distinction — group policy vs individual policies, trip protection vs liability — lives in our coverage glossary.

Can the club make the season give something back?

Yes. A club that partners with BonaVia gets its own page, and when families buy through it, BonaVia shares up to 40% of what it collects with the club as a sponsorship — plain dollars toward the travel fund or the scholarship pool, at no extra cost to any family.

The organizer’s walkthrough, worked example included, is on the teams, bands & boosters page.

Questions tournament families ask

Does an annual plan cover the whole family?

Plans are priced per traveler, and the quote flow prices your actual mix — the player, the parents, the sibling who comes along — up to six travelers per quote. Children typically rate lower than adults, so a family gets a family’s price, not an average.

Which trips count under an annual plan?

An annual plan covers the trips you take away from home, near or far, all year — each trip during the plan year, up to the plan’s per-trip length limit. The plan documents define exactly which trips qualify; that definition is in your policy and certificate.

What about the one big trip — nationals, or the summer vacation?

Per-trip cancellation on annual plans carries per-trip limits rather than a percentage of one insured trip cost. If one expensive trip is the worry, a single-trip plan may fit better — the quote flow helps you choose.

What happens if a tournament is cancelled or rained out?

It depends on the policy’s listed reasons. Trip cancellation reimburses prepaid, non-refundable costs when a covered reason named in the policy keeps you from taking the trip; trip delay is designed to help with a hotel night and meals when a covered delay — a cancelled connection, a storm — strands you. Your policy documents name the covered reasons.

Who underwrites the coverage?

Coverage is provided through licensed insurance carriers: BonaVia works with more than one, and the carrier underwriting your specific plan is named in your policy documents and certificate. BonaVia is the producer, licensed in all 50 states. Details are in our disclosures.

Can our club partner so the season gives back?

Yes. When families buy through the club’s BonaVia page, the club receives a sponsorship out of what BonaVia collects — up to 40%, tracked in plain dollars, at no extra cost to families. See teams, bands & boosters.
