For Band & School Trips

The trip the boosters built, protected.

The marching band headed to the bowl game, the robotics team headed to nationals, the spring class trip: here is what travel protection covers for the families, who buys it, and how the trip can give something back to the program.

What does travel insurance cover on a band or school trip?

The money and the people. Trip cancellation reimburses a family's prepaid, non-refundable costs when a covered reason stops their traveler from going; delay benefits help with the unplanned hotel night when a connection is cancelled; baggage benefits help when the gear lands somewhere else entirely.

For trips that leave the country — the band exchange, the language-class trip — emergency medical and evacuation benefits matter most, because many US health plans thin out or stop at the border. Benefits and limits vary by plan and state; the full walkthrough is on our coverage pages.

Who buys the coverage — the school, the boosters, or the parents?

Usually the parents, one family at a time, through the program's own BonaVia page — the same plans at the same price as anywhere else. Alternatively one organizer can enroll a group in a single purchase, so the whole roster lands under the same protection.

The school or booster club’s role is introduction, not sales: a partner program gets a co-branded page and puts the link in the newsletter, while the licensing and paperwork stay on BonaVia’s side. See schools & student travel and teams, bands & boosters for the organizer’s side, or group protection for how a single enrollment works.

How much does it cost a family?

Pricing varies by traveler age, trip cost, and trip duration, and children typically rate lower than adults. Trips are covered from about $6 a day, and the quote flow shows a family's exact price in about 90 seconds — ages are enough, no account needed.

Trip cost mainly sets the cancellation protection, so a ballpark works to see a price, refined any time before purchase.

Can the booster club really raise money this way?

Yes — as a sponsorship, not a fundraiser families pay extra for. BonaVia shares up to 40% of what it collects with the partner organization, tracked in plain dollars, and it attaches to money families were already spending on travel: no new spend, no another car wash.

The program names what the sponsorship feeds — the uniform fund, next season’s travel, the instrument repairs. The organizer’s walkthrough, worked example included, is on the teams, bands & boosters page.

Questions booster parents ask

Does buying through the school or booster club cost families more?

No. The price is the same a family would pay for the same coverage anywhere else, and nothing about the coverage or a claim changes. The sponsorship the program receives comes out of what BonaVia collects, never out of a family’s pocket.

Who underwrites the coverage?

Coverage is provided through licensed insurance carriers: BonaVia works with more than one, and the carrier underwriting your specific plan is named in your policy documents and certificate. BonaVia is the producer, licensed in all 50 states. Details are in our disclosures.

What if a student gets sick the week before departure?

If a covered reason named in the policy keeps a traveler from taking the trip — an illness, an injury, and other listed events — trip cancellation reimburses the prepaid, non-refundable money the family would otherwise lose, up to the trip cost insured.

Do parents need to hand over birth dates to see a price?

Not to see a price — ages are all the quote needs. At checkout, a date of birth is required for each covered traveler because the coverage documents require one, and it must work out to the same age the quote was priced on.

Are the chaperones covered too?

They can be. The quote flow prices your actual mix of travelers — students and adults together, up to six travelers per quote. A whole-roster enrollment for a bigger traveling program is arranged with us directly.

When should families buy?

Early — ideally soon after the first trip payment. Cancellation protection starts working the day you buy, covering the months between booking and boarding, and the pre-existing condition waiver on select plans depends on purchasing within a set window after that first payment.

Plan structure described in general terms; this is not a policy. Benefits, limits, and availability vary by plan and by state, subject to the language of the policies as issued.
